  1. The word Lingerie applies to both male and female underwear.

    The word is taken from the French word to describe undergarments in general. In the modern use of the word, it now mainly refers to female underwear.

  2. The ancient Greeks were the first society to show women wearing Bras for support.

    These were known as ‘apodesme’ and were made from natural fabrics such as wool or linen. They were frequently worn when women would participate in sports.

  • 4. In the Early 1900’s, the monobosom was a very popular look for women.

    They were pushed up and supported in a way to appear as if they only had one boob.

  • 5. Mary Phelps Jacobs (Caresse Crosby) is said to have created the bra in 1914 and holds the patent for the 1st backless bra. However there this has been disputed with some sources claiming it was created in 1889 by Hermine Cadole from France but Christine Hardt holds the patent for the Bra.

    We as women are just grateful to whoever invented the Bra.

  • 5. Men in ancient times wore girdles to hold their weapons.

    The ancient Greeks and Romans would also wear girdles where their purses would be to stop them having to wear pockets.

  • 6. The cup size system for bras began in the 30s.

    It’s important to be aware that different countries have different sizing and cupping systems. Parts of Europe, USA, Japan, Australia and the UK all follow a different lettering and number system.

  • 7. Agent Provocateur was created by Vivienne Westwood’s son, Joe Corre and his wife Serena Rees in 1994 in Soho London.

    Since its humble begins, this lingerie powerhouse brand has gone on to open shops in Russia, the US, Dubai and Hong Kong.

  • 8. Women in Norway are said to wear the largest bra size according to world data.

    The US follows closely in 2nd place.

  • 9. The Thong was created by a man who thought that exotic dancers were showing too much skin.

    It is thought that in 1939, the Mayor ruled that showgirls must perform covered up but to get around this, the thong was created. Rudi Gernreich re-invented and popularised the thong in 1970.

  • 10. Lady Duff Gordon encouraged women to ditch structured corsets in favour of comfortable Lingerie. She also survived the sinking of the Titanic.
