Jim-Jam Party 🥳

Pyjamas: A Brief History

The Pyjama or Pajama originated from India. ‘Pae Jama’ or Pai Jama’ means garment for the legs. Pyjamas were first introduced to Britain in the 17th Century. They were worn at home underneath other items such as a smoking jacket and were popular with men of that time. Pyjamas remained a comfortable item for lounging till the early 20th Century.

In the 1920’s, Pyjamas became a popular item for women, especially when Coco Chanel was photographed in a silk trouser set. Men’s Pyjamas were made from silk, cotton or flannel while women’s were often made from printed silk or rayon trimmed with ribbon or lace.

Sleep-wear was just not for sleeping in. Paul Poriet designed silk Pyjamas to be worn out during the day and evening.

In the 40s, women were wearing the ‘Baby-Doll’ Pyjama set. This consisted of a sleeveless smock top with a frilled hem and balloon knickers with a frilled hem. This style of Pyjamas continued until the mid-1960s.

Pyjamas during the 1970s were often uni-sex, inspired by men’s style. Tailored satin sets became popular again and oriental styles from Vietnam and China became mainstream.

In today’s society, women have so many choices on what they want to wear to bed. Some women prefer to go to bed in just their lingerie while others like to wear a full set of pyjamas. I think the magic is in the in-between of these two. It’s practical to have something you can go to sleep in and wake up to still look good, Having a bra set which you can wake up in the morning and still wear throughout the day and still feel comfortable and supported.
